AS I WRITE this the police are going after Ah Longs high on the wanted list for involement in kidnapping and assautls cases. We all have heard of the violence on people who could not settle their debts with Ah Longs. The police action is commendable. But there's so much they can do. The problem goes beyond all that. It's massive.
Looking at reports, folks who take loans from Ah Longs are "poor" and "low wage earners". We have read in the papers of pettty traders, hawkers , trisha riders who take loans fom Ah Longs under "frigthening terms and conditions."
Most of the time they can't keep up with the payment. And unable to pay back. They ended up being victims of Ah Longs which we are all familiar with by now. Of course there are compulsive gamblers who take loans to "feed" their "habit". Let's not be judgmental but they too become victims of Ah Longs.
But let's talk about the "poor honest" folks who needed money to "rollover' their char kway teow stall, for example. Or cash for some urgent family matters. They can't meet the criteria set by banks and financial instituitions. So they cannot get the loans. Desepate they turn to Ah Longs. Simply put as long as there are folks looking for "quick easy" loans, there will be Ah Longs. Hence banks and government agencies should step in. We understand banks operate in accordance to rules and regulations and are not welfare organisations. Still solutions must be found lest the sufferings of many more folks. And solution can be found if banks and government agencies look hard enough.
From Ah Longs let's move on to Mat Rempits.Yes the youngsters on motocycles making a nuisance of themselves and causing misery to others. The media been told or advised, (depends on how you look at it) , not to "glorify" these terrors on wheels. How ? By not refering to them as Mat Rempits. Instead we were told to call them "samseng jalanan" or road thugs. Fine. But calling them by any other name won't see them disappear from our roads. Once again it goes beyond all that. Like Ah Longs, the Rempit problem is massive. To be fair the authorities are doing all kind of things to eradicate the problem. So far no luck. But the fight must continue.
And finally smoking. Cigarettes, of course. The government plans to expand non smoking zones to cover hotel lobbies and air conditioned work places. And will continue to expand non-smoking zones until, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, "smokers realise there is no more place to smoke." Well and good. And the penalty for offenders are all in place.
Still we get people smoking in "no smoking" areas, freely and happily.
I've seen even teachers acting as coaches for their schools' sports team smoke in front of their students on the school fields. And we all know schools are non-smoking zone. Apart from being bad example to students, the smoking teachers cum coaches are passing smoke and fumes to their charges who are told by the teachers themselves to stay fit and healthy as they are involved in sports, representing their schools. And the irony of it all is the smoking goes on without action taken on the offendeing teachers.
All of us have seen for oursevles how the anti smoking rules are blatantly flouted in non-smoking zones. Even the security people who are supposed to see nobody puffs in non-smoking zones, smoke themselves.
But hey, I' m not on a crusade here. Some of my closest friends smoke. I too used to smoke . Smokers are not a bunch of inconsiderates. I've written about this before. They know what smoking do to their health. They know about the penalty for smoking in non-smoking zones. They know what they are passing on to their loved ones. But they smoke anyway anywhere. Because they can't stop. They have this ‘urge' to smoke. So I say let them. But provide them or rather give them the space to smoke.
Set up smoking rooms in public areas. In the rooms they can smoke amongst other smokers.This is not giving up the fight against smoking.This to me is to prevent smokers puffing in the faces of non-smokers. Quit smoking campaigns have not been successful. Let smokers decide when or whether they want to quit smoking, themselves.
And the fight is to prevent the "birth" of new smokers. They are getting younger by the day. (By MOHSIN ABDULLAH/MySinchew)

The Mat Rempits
In Malaysia, we have this new problem of youths who hold illegal racing along our highways and main roads. In the beginning it was all about racing at odd hours, but now they have gone on a crime spree. They are no more the helpless and less fortunate young people that many 'bleeding hearts' have made them out to be in the papers. They are a serious threat to the peace and security of the nation.
The gang rape of a 13-year-old girl and two robberies reported in Bukit Mertajam on Sunday morning are believed to have been committed by members of the Mat Rempit gang. The state police chief of Penang, Deputy Comm Datuk Koh Hong Sun said the incidents occurred within an hour of the George Town police chasing away 600 motorcyclists who had gathered in Gurney Drive. He said, “Some of them could have separated from the main group and embarked on a crime spree. Other than the three cases, they also smashed a car windscreen and sprayed foam from a fire extinguisher into the vehicle. We have not ruled out the possibility that the group could also be behind the stoning and throwing of firecrackers into a police station in Kubang Semang on Oct 15." These people are not afraid of the law or of anybody else.
I was told by a friend that one of the tactics used by these 'renegade bikers' is to place all their helmets on the road. When any car travelling along that stretch comes across these helmets, they ofcourse will stop their cars. These thugs will rush out and smash the windscreen and spray gas at the occupants and then rob them of their valuables after beating them up.
These are the same people whom the UMNO was trying to recruit as UMNOputeras. No wonder they are so arrogant. They think they have the backing of the major component of the ruling party. The government needs a rethink of their social concern activities. It is good to help children who have gone wayward through no fault of their own. They need guidance and maybe financial help to get an education to better themselves. This is not the case here. These people have money to buy motorbikes and to fiddle with them to get more power and speed for racing. Now they have turned to crime. The police have to come down hard on them and restore peace and order in this country.
The tourism industry is not the only thing at stake here. Our own safety which should be the major issue is also at stake.

Be alert when you hear the sound of motorcycles. The MyFM local radio station DJ Lam Tuck Weng was similarly attacked but luckily he was alert enough to run and took refuge inside the petrol station premises!

VIOLENT crime in progress: These pictures tell how 14 Mat Rempit ganged up to beat and rob five women during an early morning fuel stop in Bangsar.
A CCTV surveillance camera captured the attack on the three sisters and two of their cousins at the Shell petrol station in Jalan Bangsar. Traumatised, they have vowed never to go to a petrol station again after dark.
Twelve young thugs, on six motorcycles, were said to be 'hovering around the station' while a pair on another motorcycle filled up as the women drove in about 3.30am on Saturday.
They were on their way home after a function in Puchong. Sisters Uma Munusamy, 33, Chittra, 32, and Latha, 31, were to drop off cousins Ragas Letchumanan, 28, and Komala, 20, at their Bangsar home when they decided to stop for fuel.
They drove up to a pump at the station. Latha went to the window counter to pay, while Chittra, who was driving, got out to fill up. That was when the Mat Rempit, who had been noisy and boisterous, moved in, as if acting on cue.
One thug attacked Latha, splashing a can of 'Red Bull' energy drink on her face. The sweet-sour liquid stung her eyes, temporarily blinding her as the thug pushed her down, hit her with the drink can and snatched her gold chain and handphone.
Another three dashed to the car to attack the others.
'We were in fear. We thought that we had been splashed with acid, as the liquid they threw on our faces really stung,' said Uma, recalling the attack.
The women screamed for help, but none arrived. The petrol station workers were safe and sound, inside the premises, where the doors had been locked at midnight.
'The workers just stood there, watching,' said Latha. At the car, the Mat Rempit ordered the girls to hand over their valuables and handphones. One of them just couldn't wait. He yanked Uma's gold bracelet off one wrist and at the same time snatched the handphone she held in the other hand.
Despite fearing for their lives, the girls put up a fight, trying to prevent the robbers from getting away with their belongings. The scuffles only led to injuries, but fortunately, minor ones.
Ragas was hit on the head several times, while Chittra sustained injuries on her neck and right arm, besides suffering an injury to the lower lip. She was then beaten up with a soda can.
'The whole incident really traumatised us but what was worse was the fact the workers did not even bother to help,' said Uma.
This is one nightmare they do not ever want to experience again. And, for them at least, no more filling up fuel at night, or stopping anywhere either during the wee hours. Their total loss: RM3,000 in cash and valuables.
The five made a report at the Brickfields police station soon after recovering from the shock of the attack. Police said they are investigating, and have yet to identify the culprits. The women also expressed their frustration over the Mat Rempit menace.
'So much has been said, so much anger and frustration has been expressed over these motorcycle thugs... but yet they seem to be having a free run,' said Chittra.
Their only hope is that justice will be done, that the CCTV images captured by the surveillance camera will lead to arrests and conviction.

Factors of road thugs have a many factor. But, we just want to mention just 4 main factor. Firstly is family..secondly is friend in school, thirdly is community especially town community and lastly is the law not implement with good.
Family is a very important factor. Family is important because this institution is very close with mat rempit. In them house, parents is a important for educated their child. Another that, parents must give full attention to their child. For example, parents must give more loving to child. This is because they child will not find freedom with their friend.
Secondly is friend. Friend is second important matter. Second factor is partner factor at school. Partners play inside role influence their partner to do anything activity such as road thugs. They doing things that habit in time go back from school and sometimes skipping school. This case cause occurence of social problems caused by activity road thugs, for example race with their friend. Hence, partner at school much influence child action stripling to road thugs
Third factor is vicinity community. Society by today taking indifferent attitude between one by another. Society does not matter if their neighbour's child race motorcyle. This case cause teenagers felt free to doing things they such as merempit. It contrasts with first mass who was with care their neighbour's child. Hence, sense of community by today between cause occurence of increase of social problem among youth such as road thugs.
Laws not implemented effectively is fourth factor. In Malaysia, laws be not give impact profoundest to road offenders especially illegal racing. This case indirectly will increase again symptom road thugs among the young generation now. Laws prepared has failed in educating or punish those doing traffic offence. As such, laws ineffective be factored occurence of symptom road thugs

Nowadays , many teenagers was involve into the road thugs activity or “ mat rempit ” . Everyday in news paper say about accident and many soul lost. This happen when motorcycle drive in danger situation. Family, government , Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) , Institution Of Public Education and Institution Of Private Education also community must do something to solution this problems before more abject.
First , parent, father and mother is the important person and close to they children. From they children still childhood , father and mother must give them good education to lead and control they children from bad habit, such as teach them about religion and moral. Parent also must know with who their children befriend . Monitor whether their children friend good or not. Nowadays, many parent are work and no time to they children, so mother and father must give more attention to they children and taking good care to they children so that they children not involve in this activity .
Second , School, Institution Of Public Education and Institution Of Private Education must offer one or tow moral subject or civic subject . This subject aims to provide awareness all teenagers in this country to avoid the bad activity especially road thugs or “ mat rempit ”. furthermore , this institute must set up moral association or civic association such as “ kelab rukun Negara” or “ Rakan Muda ” This club can give experience to teenagers and they not waste time at weekend and involve in to the criminal and bad activity.
Next, government must renew execution the low to give teenagers know that road thugs is criminal and having heavy sentence. Government also must do many campaign through electronic media and mass media such as “ remember beloved person ” . Another solution of road thugs or “ mat rempit ” from government is they must offer one or two place for them race and to them learn how to be a good racing to representing countries to international sports.
Lastly , Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and community must consent about all teenagers in this country, if them do something and give effect to community and them self we as community must give good advice . They also can make film and move about effect road thugs to family, them self, community, and country .
In conclusion , road thugs have many way to solution this problems .that all.

MAT REMPIT PROBLEM
Q1: The Mat Rempit menace scares the public so much, even a researcher said that the police were afraid of their sheer numbers. How do you plan to tackle the problem?
Hishammuddin: No way the police are afraid of the Mat Rempit. From what I have seen and know, fear is the least of the police’s worry. It’s the question of what to do with them, it’s not just about nabbing then. They’re kids.
Secondly, we know that part of the problem is drug related. The other problem is that we can never offer these Mat Rempit a better price than what they are getting right now by winning races.
So I’ve looked at some basic questions. There are more motorcycles in Vietnam than in Malaysia, so how come they don’t have Mat Rempit there? They resolved it by getting the community involved.
Instead of locking them up, they brought their Mat Rempit to the community and that embarrassed their families. Now it may not be the solution here, but I’m looking at it in different perspectives.
At the moment, however, we will just have to go down hard on them. There is no alternative. As far as the Mat Rempit, Ah Long and street crimes are concerned, there will be no tolerance. I’ll be going down to the ground.
I’m hoping to meet Ah Long victims and hear from them what they are facing. Is it corruption? Are the police in cahoots with them? Is it a question of related crimes, like organized crimes, prostitution rings and drugs?

| Datuk Ismail Abdul Rahim, the Director-General of Labor said that the government has implemented a program where Mat Rempits can enroll and participate in which involves a trade training scheme which includes guaranteed employment. He said “The government had allocated RM50 million for the training scheme which was being conducted by the Human Resources Ministry at various centres throughout the country. Those interested could contact the nearest Labour office to register for the courses. Separate training was also being offered to unemployed degree and diploma holders and the government had allocated another RM70 million for this group. The graduates would be trained in soft skills like English language and information technology and the courses would last three to six months. Upon completion of the training, the graduates could expect a starting salary of RM1,500. Mat Rempit menace linked to drugs
THE Mat Rempit menace is here to stay unless serious and concerted efforts are made to stop them.
From being mere nuisance , they have progressed to be blatant, violent and dangerous criminals. It would be a matter of time when they resort to even murder.
In the fight against this scourge, no politician or person of important position should ever try to champion their activities by giving frivolous reasons because it could be mistakenly construed as approval for their activities in their simple minds. Their violent criminal behaviour progression could be traced to the time when someone proposed that Mat Rempit should be rehabilitated.
It has been found that some of the Mat Rempit involved in violent criminal activities are addicted to a drug known as ‘ice’ which cost RM50 to RM60 per take. How do they sustain their addiction? They resort to crime.
Such drug makes the addict artificially brave and violent.
Hence, one of the areas to tackle this problem is to test everyone of them during every police operation. At the same time, efforts should be made to eradicate the drug pushers among them.
Kudos to the police for making effort to seize their motorcycles but whether it will have any long-term effect is yet to be seen.
However, it is known that they are very scared of being incarcerated and caned in prisons.
If the present generation of Mat Rempit is not stopped or punished and made to repend, they will be the next generation of hardcore criminals.

Police propose mandatory jail penalty for 'Samseng Jalanan'

AZIZ: Time for Road Transport Act 1987 to include mandatory jail term for thugs-on- wheels
Federal Traffic police chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said a proposal to raise the penalty under an amendment
to Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 would be made to the Transport Ministry.
"We have discussed the imposition of the mandatory jail sentence on these offenders. Previously, most of them pay the fine or summonses. But once this law is enforced, all offenders must serve a jail sentence depending on the offence committed," he said.
"The mandatory jail sentence was proposed for those aged 18 years and above. We are also considering sending underage offenders to schools for juvenile delinquents like the Henry Gurney school," he said.
The order has also been given to all State traffic police contingents to form Squad 42, an elite traffic police unit.
It has proven effective in curbing illegal racing and has been established as part of the Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Perak and Penang traffic police contingents. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Aziz said in the recent 17-day operation against illegal racing and crime, 69 people were arrested nationwide. Forty of them were below 20 years and three were below 15. "Thirty-three of them have been charged in court," he said.
About 13,000 summonses were also issued to drivers and motorcyclists for various offences.
"We also seized five stolen motorcycles and arrested 29 people suspected of drug abuse."

I'm referring to this piece of news from thestar. Road thugs, aka "samseng jalan", are defined as "motorcyclists who endanger the public by speeding or riding recklessly." This is a tag that police can sticks to just about anyone involves in an accident, since if you cause an accident, you must have been either speeding or riding recklessly.
I see the police is trying to divert the attention from Mat Rempit. According to the goverment and police recently, Mat Rempit, for all the havocs they did to the public, needs caring, love, understanding and not punishment or jail. Ministers alike said people need to look at the root cause, their upbringing, they are bored, no money, etc, and try to cherish more love to these menace.
And now, for ordinary road users, when you happen to involve in an accident, beware, for you can be easily prosecuted as "samseng jalan", and go straight to jail.
Where's the logic? The government is using ordinary people as a lesson to Mat Rempit.
By the way, what about those police escorts? Also those JPJ officers and police alike who race along the north-south highway like there's no tomorrow, flashing headlights as they tailgate road users, then speed away in like 180km/h? I do think these group of people are "endangering the public by speeding or riding recklessly".
