Police propose mandatory jail penalty for 'Samseng Jalanan'
AZIZ: Time for Road Transport Act 1987 to include mandatory jail term for thugs-on- wheels
Federal Traffic police chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof said a proposal to raise the penalty under an amendment
to Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 would be made to the Transport Ministry.
"We have discussed the imposition of the mandatory jail sentence on these offenders. Previously, most of them pay the fine or summonses. But once this law is enforced, all offenders must serve a jail sentence depending on the offence committed," he said.
"The mandatory jail sentence was proposed for those aged 18 years and above. We are also considering sending underage offenders to schools for juvenile delinquents like the Henry Gurney school," he said.
The order has also been given to all State traffic police contingents to form Squad 42, an elite traffic police unit.
It has proven effective in curbing illegal racing and has been established as part of the Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Perak and Penang traffic police contingents. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Aziz said in the recent 17-day operation against illegal racing and crime, 69 people were arrested nationwide. Forty of them were below 20 years and three were below 15. "Thirty-three of them have been charged in court," he said.
About 13,000 summonses were also issued to drivers and motorcyclists for various offences.
"We also seized five stolen motorcycles and arrested 29 people suspected of drug abuse."

i agree with this artical.the road thugs need to get MANDATORY jail. this is can help to prevent the road thugs. this is also give some lesson to another road thugs or "samseng jalanan".this is more to less this bad activity like merempit.
